First of many poems by Ted Heimerdinger

WHAT MIGHT GROW   for Lisa and her Garden
September  2007

growing
on history,
catastrophes:
the earth slipping and sliding
away off to Siberia,
or is it the other direction?
volcanoes throwing up fire, boulders, and dust;
and in between,
a million marshy ages,
softly silting over.
fishy home,
place for ducks to dabble,
where herons stalk and preen.
a marshland and muddy shore
offering renewal
for exhausted, migrating
shorebirds,
long legs and short.
thousand of years of first people,
shucking shells,
paddling in reed canoes,
casting nets and gambling,
living in your garden.

who knows
what might come up
in your garden?
